AVOIDING THE PITFALLS OF TRANSFERRING

GOALS OF UNIT:

Discuss ways to avoid the following transfer pitfalls (provide examples where appropriate)---
  • PITFALL #1 - Not Applying Correctly or by Deadlines
(not having back-up plan in place)
    • Application process and deadlines
    • Transfer requirements (grades/GPA/standardized tests)
    • Choosing a major (research various career opportunities)
    • Locate most recent catalog information using the web (if available)

TIME: Approximately 15-20 minutes

  • PITFALL #2 - Losing course credits taken at community college
    • For Alabama Students - show students how to obtain state transfer information (Use STARS as an example)
    • For students transferring to private schools or schools outside the state help them find information about transcript evaluation processes in place
    • Emphasize the importance of meeting with representatives at the prospective university to clarify and finalize general studies course requirements

TIME: Approximately 15-20 minutes

  • PITFALL #3 - Not preparing financially for the final years of college
    • Help students find out as much as they can about financial aid (do they qualify for any?)
    • Help students find out about scholarships - especially for transfer students
    • Help students who need to obtain student loans
  • Help students find people on universities and around universities who are looking to hire college students for part-time work

    TIME: Approximately 15-20 minutes

NOTE: These are just three examples of possible "transfer pitfalls." Feel free to add to these as needed. Time spent on each may also be adjusted.
