GOAL
OR PURPOSE:
The primary
purpose of this course is to provide Alabama community college
advisors and counselors with an instructional process in which
they can teach their prospective transfer students about the
pitfalls associated with transferring from one institution to
another. Hopefully, through this process, your students can avoid
future difficulty or minimize the stress associated with changing
schools.
PHILOSOPHICAL
BASIS:
There
are a number of reasons for teaching this information. Many
students lose credits when transferring from
one school to another. This can result in a great amount of wasted
time and money. In addition, many students find the transfer process
to
be confusing
and stressful. This information, if presented correctly, can help
your students to become pro-active rather than re-active as they
go through the transfer
process.
STATE
OF ALABAMA LEGISLATIVE MANDATE:
In March of
1994, the Alabama State Legislature passed ACT 94-202. This legislation
created the Articulation and
General Studies Committee (AGSC).
The AGSC was charged with creating a statewide articulation (transfer
credit) program that would help prevent the loss of transfer credit
from one public institution to another. In addition, it expanded
the roll of the Statewide Articulation & Transfer
Reporting
System
(STARS)
to provide state approved transfer
guides for students. For more
information
about the AGSC and STARS please click the AGSC/STARS Logo below.
NOTE: Other states may have similar articulation/transfer
programs in place. Encourage students to check with their state government
to see is such programs exist.
