Thousands of
students attend community colleges in Alabama. A large percentage of these
students choose to transfer to other colleges and universities in order to
complete bachelor degrees. Often students find the transfer process to be both
intimidating and stressful. If advisors, counselors, and other community
college staff members take an active role in the transfer process, they can
help their students avoid future problems related to transfer admissions,
transfer of credit, financial aid, and social adjustment.
This course (or
mini-curriculum unit) has been design specifically to provide Alabama community
college advisors and counselors with ideas or instructional concepts that can
be incorporated into existing orientation programs.
NOTE: This course
(curriculum unit) can be modified and used to inform other groups about
transfer related issues. The course format is simply a suggestion. Please feel
free to add to what is presented on this site or use only the specific parts of
this course that would be beneficial to your students as you address their
current academic situation.
The course is set up
based on the following assumptions:
- It is to be used as a
teaching unit within an existing orientation course.
- It has 3 units ( each
design to last approximately 1 hour each or one class period).
- Effective counseling and
advising is important; however, success navigating the transfer process is the
ultimate responsibility of the prospective transfer student. Many of the ideas
and suggestions are not useful if the student does not take some initiative to
investigate and research the transfer process to find out what is
required.
